Another Runner-Up For Mead at New Smyrna Speedway

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL (Jul. 31, 2017) – Matt Mead continued to improve in his stock car career on Saturday night, capturing a second place finish at New Smyrna Speedway just mere car lengths off the back bumper of the race winner. It was his career best run and by all accounts, the best overall race of his short career.

In order to maximize learning opportunities, Mead and the Anthony Campi Racing team took Friday to make laps and work on various things during a private test at the half-mile Florida track. Matt used the time to give feedback on the car’s setup and work on his racecraft with the crew through various practice-type scenarios like different lines and cornering techniques.

On raceday, Matt started on pole for the qualifying heat and ran second behind a seasoned veteran at the facility. During the feature contest, Matt started on the front row and fell back to third, but worked his way up to second in the closing laps. On a late-race restart, he nosed ahead into the lead in turn one but was bypassed by a more experienced driver who he chased to the checkered flag to finish in the runner-up spot.

“This was a pretty good race for us, mainly because we made more improvements from the last one in terms of our race pace and racing other cars harder,” Mead said after the race in a very humble tone. “We had nearly the same pace as the leader in both the heat and the feature, and if he slipped we would have been side-by-side for the lead, possibly even better. It was a big step in the right direction. We made many gains and I’m really excited to see what we can do next weekend when we come back.”

Matt’s next race with Anthony Campi Racing’s pro late model team is this weekend, August 5, where he will once again compete at New Smyrna Speedway in a pro late model.
